Nay Pyi Taw – The Deputy Minister for Home Affairs told media on February 17 that legal action will be taken against those who breach the agreement of the four-party talks with students over amending the National Education Law.
Brigadier-General Kyaw Zan Myint said, "Students, the government and the two other participants in the four-party talks have signed agreements to continue the amendment process of the National Education Law. If protest students continue marching to Yangon, we will take legal action against them to prevent unrest."
Protesting students have announced that they will only stop marching to Yangon after parliament approved their demands, noting that people are worried about potential violence between the students and security forces.
The four-party talks involving the government, parliamentarians, the National Network for Education Reform group and the students’ Committee for Democracy Education Movement reached agreement on all 11 of the students’ demands on February 11.
One group of marching students from the Ayeyarwaddy Region cited the progress with the four-party talks as reason to suspend their march after 100 miles of walking on February 16, according to posts on social media.
