Some observers are claiming that the recent 2020 general elections are seeing more electoral disputes than the 2010 and 2015 elections.

According to the contents posted on the official Union Election Commission (UEC) website, there were 29 objections in the 2010 general elections and 45 objections in 2015 elections. However, when it comes to the 2020 elections, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) alone is preparing to file hundreds of objections to the election commission.

The cognizable offence related with electoral disputes must be registered within 15 days. USDP spokesman Thein Tun Oo said that the electoral cognizable offences were basically the offences like double voting and forgery of ballot papers. The objection complaints must be submitted to the commission within 45 days from the date of declaring winning candidate with detailed facts and complete evidence.

A USDP party spokesman said the party was checking all the details in these objections, complaints and cognizable offences. If the USDP party alone submitted and registered over 750 complaints and cases excluding other parties’ complaints and cases, the observes assumed that the electoral tribunals must hear these cases.
