HR Commission issues statement on Kyauktan incident

Myanmar Human Rights Commission issued a press release dated June 13 which says authorities should try to build mutual confidence between security personnel and local villagers.

It issued the statement after submitting their report on the Kyauktan incident to the President, Home Ministry and Defence Ministry on June 10.

Tatmadaw (Defence Services) entered Kyauktan village on April 30 and verified the 477 households in the village against the household registration. They took out 275 male villagers in aged between 15-50 who were detained in the village school for questioning.

During the interrogation, shooting broke out and six villagers were killed and eight injured.

Regarding the incident, Tatmadaw True News Information Committee said in a press conference held in Naypyitaw that the detainees tried to harm security personnel which had to fire to disperse the crowd.
