Major General attends a tree-planting ceremony inside Historical Mandalay Palace

The Central Command, Mandalay, in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Trust (New) organized a Sandalwood Tree Planting Ceremony inside the historical Mandalay Palace, in commemoration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The event followed a Sandalwood Tree Planting Ceremony earlier in the week near the East of the moat in Mandalay in commemoration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Major General Kyaw Swar Lin, Commander, Central Command, Mandalay along with Mr.Nandan Singh Bhaisora, Consul General of India, in Mandalay (with their spouses) planted two sandalwood trees. U Maung Shwe, Chairman, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Trust (New) and other members of the Trust, army officers with their spouses, prominent community leaders, Consulate officers and staff also participated in the tree planting ceremony.

The Commander, in his speech said that he was inspired by the teaching of Mahatma Gandhi since his childhood and is greatly moved by Gandhiji’s message of non-violence and peace, noting that Gandhiji was a great leader beyond borders and cultures.

The Commander expressed that he is very happy and honoured to partake in the tree planting ceremony to celebrate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. U Rajul Goenka and Professor Khin Maung Cho, members of the Trust also gave speeches on the relevance of Gandhian values. Consul General thanked the Commander for organizing this event in Mandalay Palace and also stated that it is of great significance as three important freedom fighters of India- Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai and Bal Gangadhar Tilak were imprisoned in the jail within the palace. He also presented Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography - My Experiments with Truth (Burmese translation) to the Commander.
