Shija performs the first kidney transplant for an international patient from Myanmar

News is just out that for the first time in Northeast India, Shija medical facility performed their first kidney transplant for an international patient from Mandalay, Myanmar.

Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI) has been at the forefront towards making Manipur as one of the medical tourism destinations. SHRI started the venture of Shija Mission Myanmar in May 2013 as an endeavor towards Indo- Myanmar connection through healthcare. 

So far, three health camps have been conducted at Monywa General Hospital, Myanmar wherein 345 cleft lip and palate, cataract blindness and key-hole surgeries were performed for free a team of doctors from Shija Hospitals. SHRI in collaboration with AMASI (Association of Minimal Access Surgeons India), have also provided two months free training to two surgeons and six nurses from Myanmar in the areas of Laparoscopic surgery, Operation Theatre Technology and Critical Care under Shija Overseas Training Program.

Shija Hospitals has been treating many patients from Myanmar and attracted more than 1,974 Myanmar medical tourists with VISA since the border crossing was allowed on 08-08-2018. So far 262 Myanmar patients have undergone major surgeries including open heart surgeries, joint replacement, kidney transplantation, brain tumour, spine surgeries, eye care, cosmetic surgeries and majority for state-of-the-art stone solutions in the urinary and biliary system.

Mrs. Yin Tin Myo, 42 years from Mandalay, Myanmar, was a known case for end stage renal disease on maintenance hemodialysis. The Consulate General of Myanmar in Kolkata provided a Objection Certificate (NOC) for the Kidney Transplant after assessing all the relevant documents on 01.11.2019. Shija Hospitals based Authorization Committee provided her the NOC on 09.11.2019 and subsequently, NOC by Dr. K. Rajo Singh, Chairman State Medical Board was issued on 14.11.2019. Video Counseling was done on 05.12.2019. She was finally admitted for a Kidney Transplant at Shija Hospitals on 06.12.2019. 

The historic kidney transplant surgery of the first international patient in North Eastern India was performed by a team of doctors led by Dr. Somorendro P., Consultant Urologist and Renal Transplant Surgeon and Dr. Guliver P., Consultant Nephrologist on 07-12-2019. She was discharged from the hospital in a stable condition on 30.12.2019.
