Sai Ai Paung, chairman of the Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (SNDP), also known as the White Tiger Party or Kya Phyu Party, has called for parliament to be convened only after resolving millions of surplus votes believed to be due to alleged fraud.

Only then the 2020 general election will be considered a free and fair election, according to a January 24 statement from the SNDP.

The Union Election Commission (UEC) was contacted by telephone whether electoral disputes need to be resolved before the new parliament convenes but it did not respond.

According to the 2008 constitution, a new parliament must be convened within 90 days of the election, and the second parliament session of five-year term expires on January 31. Therefore, the delegates for the third parliament are in Naypyidaw and are preparing to convene the parliament on February 1.
