A military tribunal in Sittway, Rakhine State, sentenced three soldiers to 20 years in prison on December 11 for raping a 36-year-old woman in U Ga Village, Rathedaung Township, Rakhine State.

They were sent to Sittway Prison.

On 10 July, the woman filed a complaint with the Sittwe Myoma Police Station, alleging that three soldiers from a military convoy entered into the village on June 29 and raped her.

“They were charged under Article 376, 366 and Article 71 of the Tatmadaw Law. In total, each of them was sentenced to 20 years in prison,” said lawyer Daw Mya Thu, who is working for the case.

Lawyer Daw Mya Thu said that she thinks the 20-year prison sentence is a maximum sentence for the case.
