UK funded scholarship program open for applications

Myanmar citizens can now apply for fully-funded postgraduate study in the UK, under the UK Government’s prestigious Chevening Scholarship programme.

Applications are open between 5 August and 5 November 2019, with applications to be submitted via www.chevening.org/apply. To be eligible, candidates must have completed an undergraduate degree and have at least two years of work experience.

Last year’s application window saw 13 successful applicants from Myanmar, who will be starting their studies later this year at world-leading universities including Oxford, the London School of Economics and University College London.

Myanmar already has a strong network of former Chevening scholars who have gone on to take up leading roles in government ministries, civil society and the private sector.

This year, Myanmar Chevening alumnus Pyone Thet Thet Kyaw, who studied at the University of Birmingham in 2011, was chosen as one of 35 Chevening ‘Changemakers’ from around the world, representing the real impact of the Chevening community globally.

Pyone has become a leader in the field of ethical fashion in Myanmar after studying in the UK.  She is the founder of fashion brand Virya Myanmar and coaches young women from underprivileged backgrounds to help them become confident and independent. She is also active in working on improving governance in Myanmar.

Pyone Thet Thet Kyaw said, “I applied for the Chevening scholarship because I wanted to experience the global education system and tap into a worldwide network of leaders to find solutions to the challenges of our day. The world is facing some of its greatest challenges in centuries, and we can only solve these if we work together and stand up for our principles. I encourage the next generation of leaders to go out and learn, open yourselves up, get out of your comfort zone and work for hand in hand with others to find the solutions we need.”

Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals with demonstrable leadership potential who also have strong academic backgrounds. The scholarship offers full financial support for future leaders to study for any eligible master’s degree at any UK university whilst also gaining access to a wide range of exclusive academic, professional, and cultural experiences.

Since the programme was created in 1983, over 50,000 outstanding professionals have had the opportunity to develop in the UK through Chevening. There are more than 1,500 scholarships on offer globally for the 2020/2021 academic year, demonstrating the UK’s ongoing commitment towards developing the leaders of tomorrow, a press release said.
