A refugee community from Myanmar in North Carolina, US, has been shocked by a triple homicide.

An 18-year-old ethnic Karen man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing deaths of three children in the southeastern US state, police said March 18.

Responding to a report of a person walking down the street with a knife, police disarmed Eh Lar Doh Htoo late March 17 at a house in New Bern, North Carolina, where they found the bodies of two of the victims. The third died as he was being transported to a hospital.

A UN rights expert, who was harshly criticised and threatened during a recent visit to Myanmar, said March 18 she expected the government to invite her back and to ensure her safety, despite another threat having been made against her.

"I am convinced I will be invited back," United Nations Special Rapporteur on Myanmar Yanghee Lee told reporters in Geneva.

Myanmar will inspect all state-owned vessels after a ferry accident off the country's western Rakhine state that left at least 61 people dead, state media said on March 18.

The boat, which was carrying more than 200 passengers and crew, was "overloaded when it capsized" on March 13 evening, said transport minister U Nyan Tun Aung, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar.
