India’s plan to import rice from Myanmar to avoid a supply crisis in Manipur and Mizoram has been abandoned according to the Nagaland Post on 5 July.
The Manipur government received a directive from the union government to abandon all processes related with the import of the item reportedly taking into consideration irregularities associated with other programmes in some Northeast (NE) states including Manipur.
Manipur was targeting to transport 10,000 MT of rice from Myanmar in a month. For the import, the Manipur government has been developing infrastructure including a food testing laboratory and godowns in Moreh, the border town of Manipur to store the rice before transporting it to Imphal.
