They expect to add more than 2,000 new hotel rooms.

Presently, there are a total of more than 2,100 hotel rooms in Bagan.

In comparison with 2011, the number of foreign tourists visiting Bagan in the first six months of this year increased by more than 50 per cent, officials said.

According to figures compiled by the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, more than 102,500 foreign tourists visited Bagan in 2011 and more than 77,500 visited from January 2012 to June 2012.

The official said, “They have estimated that about 2,000 rooms need to be added. But, I cannot say how many new rooms will be available in reality.”

The Hotels and Tourism Ministry predicts that up to 1 million foreign tourists will visit Burma this year

Meanwhile, 26 hoteliers have submitted proposal to the Mandalay Region government, requesting to lease a total of about 1,260 acres of land located near Tuywin Mountain in Nyaung-U Township to build hotels, Zaw Waik, the secretary of the Myanmar Hoteliers’ Association (Bagan Zone), said.
