Import permits were issued for 120,000 cars coming into Burma between September 2011 and December 7, 2012.
“Of the 116,695 cars, nearly 76,000 are imported as substitutions, while 40,000 are being imported as brand new purchases,” said Minister Win Myint from the Ministry of Commerce at a meeting hosted by Myanmar Automobile Association (temporary) in Yangon Region Government office on December 24.
From October 25, 2011, to March 30, 2012, a total of 99.4 billion kyat (US $117 million) was collected in taxes on imported vehicles, he said.
How many of the additional 40,000 vehicles will be kept in Rangoon is unknown, but it can only add to the traffic woes already plaguing the city. Planners have recently announced that several overpasses will be constructed to relief some of the congestion.
