Myanmar Airways International plan to begin offering flights to Indonesia this December, as part of a codeshare agreement with Garuda Indonesia, signed on November 25 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

U Sithu, managing director of MAI and Mr Erik Meijer, sales and marketing executive vice president of Garuda Indonesia signed the agreement that will connect Yangon and Jakarta by way of Singapore and Bangkok.

A MAI press release said the agreement means that MAI will be able to market Garuda’s Bangkok and Singapore to Jakarta flights and in return Garuda will market MAI’s offer between Bangkok and Singapore and Yangon.

“Code sharing means that passengers can enjoy extended routes, improvement in services,” said the press release, adding they expect these flights to improve and promote opportunities for bilateral trade.

At the signing, U Sithu said that these new codeshare services demonstrated the growing importance of Indonesia to Myanmar as a market and trading partner.

Garuda Indonesia president director Emirsyah Satar told the press conference that the agreement was expected to boost trade and tourism between the two countries, as supported by the central government.

Traffic between Myanmar and Indonesia has increased quite dramatically over recent years, from 4,500 passengers per month last year to around 6,000 passengers per month this year, he said.
