A Danish funded capacity building programme aimed at improving social dialogue in Myanmar was officially launched today with the participation of H.E. U Thein Swe, Union Minister for Labour, Immigration and Population, and H.E. Mr. Jørn Neergaard Larsen, Minister for Employment of Denmark.
The programme will run until 2018 and aims at increasing the capacity of Myanmar workers and employers representatives (social partners) and Government to engage in social dialogue, thereby improving the industrial relations, the business environment and the working conditions in the country, according to a statement from the Embassy of Denmark to Myanmar.
The launch took place at Sedona Hotel where representatives of Myanmar employers (UMFCCI) and workers (CTUM, AFFM-IUF and MICS) signed Memoranda of Understanding on the programme with their Danish counterparts, the Confederation of Danish Industries and the LO/FTF Council.
In this connection Danish Minister for Employment Mr. Larsen said:
“Denmark is very pleased to share its experience on developing a strong labour market which can contribute to social and economic growth”.
The launch reflects the shared view of the social partners that they hold a common interest in working better and closer together in order to sustain production, employment and high and inclusive economic growth in Myanmar. As such, a constructive dialogue based and consensus seeking approach is at centre stage in the programme, the statement said.
