Norstar Ship Management has opened a new crewing office in Yangon, Myanmar, which will undertake all crew staffing and departure arrangements for its Singapore-based parent company reported splash247.com on 17 June.
The new office, named Norstar Crew Management Company Limited, was opened earlier this month by Muang Muang Oo, Myanmar’s director general of the department of maritime administration.
“Norstar is delighted to have care of a loyal crew pool of around 1,000 Myanmar seafarers, men who have worked on our managed fleet for a number of years. Importantly, we also employ Myanmar superintendents ashore who have sailed with our crew and are well known to them,” Norstar Ship Management’s director Tom Bonehill told Splash today.
“It is a source of great pleasure and pride to us that the crew pool operates as a family, and this is fully in line with how we run our family-owned business,” he said.
The opening of the office has been timed to coincide with Norstar’s plans to expand, Bonehill told Splash.
“We presently manage a fleet of 19 tankers and expect to increase our fleet significantly over the next six to 12 months. Ideally, we aim manage up to 40 ships on a phased-in basis,” he said.
“We have the infrastructure and resources to do this in both Singapore and Yangon, and we are also expanding our training programmes to cater for the anticipated fleet increase.”
Cadets from the Myanmar Maritime University and the Myanmar Maritime Mercantile College are among those being recruited by Norstar Crew Management in the country.
