Myanmar has upgraded six major airports in terms of safety and security by installing new equipment, reports Xinhua on March 2.
According to the transport ministry official, Japan International Cooperation Agency has donated equipment and vehicles worth 1.23 billion yen [K12.33 billion] for upgrading the six airports of Yangon, Mandalay, Nyaung U, Heho, Thandwe and Dawei.
The ministry official said the donation is a part of bilateral aid programme between Myanmar and Japan.
The six airports are used by about 3 million passengers annually, according to the ministry. In total, all of Myanmar's airports handled an estimated 4.4 million passengers last year.
