Voices on Daw Suu Kyi’s prosecution

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Ko Wild, Mizzima reporter presents scathing comments by some political leaders on the framing of charges against pro-democracy leader and General Secretary of the 'National League for Democracy' (NLD) party Daw Aung San Suu Kyi today, under section 22 of 'Law safeguarding the state from the danger of destructive elements.

U Aye Thar Aung
(Secretary, Committee Representing People's Parliament-CRPP)

Regarding breaching the detention condition, in my view, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is under detention. The authorities who detained her were responsible for her security. So the security forces must take the responsibility for the intrusion into the restricted area by the American. If a man enters a place where only women are living, they are vulnerable and cannot resist such intrusion efficiently.

U Khun Myint Tun
(Former political prisoner)
(Member of Parliament, NLD, Thaton Township constituency 1)

They really planned to assassinate Daw Aung Suu Kyi and her party members, pro-democracy activists in the Depayin massacre. Luckily Daw Suu survived this plot. The SPDC (junta) has obviously and resolutely showed that they would not start a dialogue in Burmese politics since this Depayin massacre. And again, after detaining her unfairly, they have framed cases against her and will hand out a prison sentence on this false case this time. It is a blatant and gross violation and disregard of the 1990 election result.

Moreover this incident clearly shows they (junta) have no plan and will to engage in a dialogue with the Opposition. In this country, many prisoners including Ko Min Ko Naing, U Gambira and U Khun Tun Oo, serving their prison terms are not persons who were found guilty of committing crimes. All of them were framed and given prison sentences. Framing an innocent person itself is committing a crime. It is certain that they are going to sentence Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to  prison.

Comrade Po Than Jaung
(Spokesman, Communist Party of Burma)

We have very limited information on this case. The SPDC (junta) seems to be concealing something deliberately. Among them is the fact that Dr. Tin Myo Win had already reported about the man to the authorities concerned. The SPDC must reveal everything about this fact. What did he report to them, why did they issue visa to the same person when they knew about him well after being reported by Dr. Tin Myo Win. They could have simply denied him visa. He didn't enter our country illegally. There are many suspicious things in this case.

We think we can resolve this crisis successfully by organizing our own people in the country and by the power of the people. The outside world cannot do this task. This case is a foul play of the junta. I do not say exactly that the people must stage protests against this case. I think it will be successful only by the way the people express their awareness, their interest and their opposition against this case by all possible means.

U Mahaw Khun Sa
(General Secretary, Ethnic Nationalities Council – ENC)

I see Daw Suu as a person on whom the people across the country have faith. She is also influential. The junta drafted the 2008 constitution for the perpetuation of State power and legitimize military rule. And they will hold general elections in 2010 in the framework of this constitution. As far as we know, the detention period of Daw Suu will be over by the end of this month. They would have to release her. Aware of her influence over the people, we predicted long ago that they would continue her detention by giving various lame excuses to avoid hurdles and disturbances in their way to the general election. So we see this case as a frame up against her to continue her detention for the sake of manipulation in the 2010 general election according to their wish.
