Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Mizzima reporter Phanida has compiled and presented the voices of women on the controversial lyrics of hip-hop singer Jauk Jet, and its ramifications.

These women from all walks of life, including writers, reporters, film directors, bloggers, students, etc have requested anonymity for this report. The pirated copies of Jauk Jet's albums have spread in Rangoon to some extent and most of the people have agreed that the lyrics in his songs are obscene and vulgar.

The Press Scrutiny Board (Censor Board) and the Burma Music Association called 22 year old singer Jauk Jet, to their offices in the middle of this month and made him sign a bond of not repeating it in future.

Jauk Jet began his hip-hop career in 2004, while his real name is Zin Min Lwin.

Discussions on Jauk Jet and his songs are banned in Myanmar IRC and Myanmar Chit-Chat blogs, posted from Burma.

Response of a 20-year old lady fan of hip-hop songs

"The current generation of youths is fond of hip-hop music. Though we accept a more liberal society, we cannot accept songs insulting Burmese women and tarnishing all of them with the same brush," a 20 year old lady fan of hip-hop music from Rangoon said.

"His songs are so vulgar and rude. The politicians see these songs as a way out and put him in the limelight. But this way out might be wrong. This sort of thing is possible here," she added.

Response by a 23-year old lady

"Yes, we should object to his songs. He should not sing such songs. These songs should be banned immediately and he should be imprisoned too."

Opinion of a lady blogger

"I don't like these songs because they are so rude and vulgar. The lyrics of the songs are obscene. He must not be allowed to sing. It's too rude. I'd like to say to him, "You are so rude and vulgar. Shame on you!"

Response by a 21-year old lady

"This is not art. Art is tender and polite. I'd like to say to him as a woman, that he is possibly uneducated. It is also likely that he has been brought up in a split family and so maybe he is upset with the society of women. I think we should educate him. We must educate him on what is gender equality and what women stand for."

Opinion of a film director

"It is said among the youths that his songs have extremely vulgar lyrics. There are bad women and good women in society. He should not sing like that. The censor board should not accept them. These songs should be banned. They disrespect our Burmese culture too. So, we must protest against these songs."
