Since the latest uprising was provoked by the junta deliberately by raising the price of fuel without an announcement, the only thing that can be gleaned from this was the junta deliberately fomented unrest ahead of the 2008 Olympics to weed out all possible disrupters of the Beijing show.
The Burmese people could have been given notice of a week before the price hike but the way it was done indicates that it was a deliberate provocative act meant to incite unrest. After the monks were injured there was no apology issued which further provoked unrest.
The protests seem to have been deliberately allowed to continue until the secret police had a good idea that most of the dissenters had come out into the open then the crackdown began. They could have shut down the Internet before the ugly scenes were released to the international media but China had an interest in making sure that their own citizens got a good glimpse of what would happen to them too if they were to consider using the Beijing Olympics to stage a protest.
Once the dissenters had been identified and the message had been sent loud and clear to Chinese living both inside and outside China then they shut off fall communications and began the purge.
All this has the hallmarks of a Beijing/Rangoon intelligence initiative to make doubly sure that both inside China and Burma there would be no interference once the Olympics had begun.
High handedness I believe will continue unscrupulously right up to and through the Olympics with no let up. Hefty jail sentences will be given to make sure all potential dissenters are under lock and key by August 2008.
If the Burmese protesters are seen in any way whatsoever to have won even the minutest of concessions then as in 1989 the Chinese democracy movement might have been tempted to follow suit. China simply could not take that chance so I am convinced, they requested the junta to be brutal to the extreme while at the same time appeasing the international community's outrage with a watered down ineffectual slap on the wrist which amounts to absolutely nothing.
What is clear to me is that this latest uprising was provoked by the junta by raising fuel prices suddenly and by mistreating monks. The junta could very easily have prevented an uprising by giving notice of the hike and not mistreating the monks but they chose to go with the provocation.
The Burmese should not have swallowed the bait and waited until the Olympics to make their move. Would the junta have killed monks on the same day that the Olympic Torch was lit? I doubt it. I also highly doubt if there will be anyone remaining to rise up by 08/08/08 as I expect the crackdown to continue in severity and even get worse 'behind close doors'.
The international community is impotent and can nothing because of a corrupt UN and the generals have indicated that they have the guns and don't care about words and condemnations.
Meanwhile the 2008 Olympics will go ahead in real style while the Burmese will be effectively in chains and fetters being tortured.
If the world had a true World Order based upon justice and human rights instead of an order based upon national interests then the junta would have lost power ages ago but sadly this is not the case. While we 'can't interfere in internal affairs and can use the veto to prevent intervention then the Burmese military have been given the green light to eternally brutalize and torture their own people with the sanction of the nationalistic UN system.
There is nothing anybody can say or do until we have a World Parliament, A World Judiciary with a World Legislature and a World Executive with a World Intervention Force to intervene in cases where rogue governments like the Burmese can be forcefully removed.
The only other way I believe is for the entire populace of Burma to arise unitedly or fight a civil war with the Burmese Army split against itself but how likely is that?
Prayers and Love to all
