What Myanmar People Need!

The content of the article is what is bothering all Myanmar people after the announcement of a referendum and election by the military junta, and it is even more frustrating after the recent release of the election laws containing many discriminations never heard of before in our country.

I sincerely hope that all these announcements are highlighted by the United Nations, regional organizations and all freedom-loving communities. In my humble opinion we need international observers to make the said referendum "free and fair". This is also the time for the junta to show honesty in conducting the referendum and to score a point for the election to follow in 2010.

People are waiting for an answer regarding the procedure in voting before taking part in it. Without the presence of international observers the referendum will be a "COMPLETE SHAM" and a "BOYCOTT" will be well justified. With the presence of international observers a good turnout of voters could be expected to show their heart's desire by voting either 'Yes' or 'No'. This is the meaning of a referendum.

A negotiated solution to some sticky points in the referendum and in the polling laws is needed for a free and fair referendum. A negotiation between the military and opposition groups, ethnic and political, is essential for the successful conduct of the referendum. If properly worked out, it could be the much needed first step towards national reconciliation, offering some hope for a better future for Myanmar. If not, the country will remain in political impasse and a humanitarian mess. No other nation in the world is going to suffer more than Myanmar. The leaders of our country should consider the fate of the 54 million common people rather than only that of the 400,000 in uniform.

Hoping for the best,

Sd. Vamsapala.
