(Letter to Editor) – I wondered about something after reading an article about land confiscation. I agree that ongoing illegal land confiscation happens in Burma, but I agree without knowing anything about the land ownership law in the country. I feel it’s not fair if someone loses a coconut garden or a farm is confiscated, and if the government relocates villages and houses.
I have seen where the government confiscated land from the owner with a little bit of compensation and sold or gave it to companies to make a resort. The authority claimed that the land belonged to the government so it can take the land anytime it wishes.
Today a lot of coconut farmers are very afraid of the government and fear some company will come and take their land.
How can they defend themselves if the government tries to take their land? Do they have a right to own their land? If the government forces them to sell their land against their will, what can they do? Who can they ask for help? Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thank you,
