Officials from Myanmar and other countries have visited a Japanese city to observe how a local government conducts an election, according to a 6 June report by NHK.
Nine electoral officials from Myanmar, Egypt and 3 other territories visited Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, on Saturday.
The tour was organised by the Japan International Cooperation Agency or JICA. Myanmar is scheduled to hold a general election later this year.
The officials visited an elementary school that will serve as a polling station for Sunday's elections to choose the city's mayor and assembly members.
They observed Japanese officials preparing for the poll.
A local election committee official described how staff hand ballots to voters and how they manage ballot boxes.
Participants asked details of electoral procedures and took photographs.
They will observe the vote-counting process on Sunday.
A government official from Myanmar said he understands the importance of elections for democracy. He said he wants to pass on what he has seen to his colleagues at home.
