A girl died in a building collapse on  March 14 evening in Rangoon. Photo: Mizzima: Six rescue workers were  injured after some parts of the three-story building collapsed again,  while they were trying to rescue the 15-year old girl trapped under the  debris. Firefighters extinguishing a fire at  Theingyi Market in Rangoon on Monday evening at 6 p.m. (local time).  Photo -  Mizzima As part of the Burmese government’s ongoing privatisation process the Myawaddy Publishing House in Rangoon has been transferred to the private sector. Photo – Mizzima. The government-run Myawaddy Publishing House has been transferred to Pyi Thar Yar, in Bauk Thaw at the former military record office.

The writers and fans organized a dinner meeting to honor Burma's Influential writers Dagon Tayar and Paragu on the 62nd anniversary of Independence Day, January 4, 2010. Photo: Mizzima The main opposition party The National League for Democracy observed the 62nd anniversary of Burma's Independence Day today in its headquarters  in Rangoon while the military regime held a separate ceremony. With India buying Toor (pigeon peas) from Burma, the price of the bean and its export rate are on the upswing. The prevailing buying price of the bean is Kyat 905,000 (about USD 950) per ton while the export price in over USD 1,000 per ton. Photo-Mizzima.

Traders from China and Burma are exhibiting  a variety of products ranging from motorcycles to hardwood , jewellery and gems. Burmese women in New Delhi singing at a function organised by SANGAT, a Network of South Asian Network of Feminists, on November 30, while observing the ‘South Asian Women’s Day’. Though the Rangoon Division Peace and Development Council had set November 30 as the deadline to stop all production of polythene bags, after the request by factory owners and business entrepreneurs, the deadline was extended to March 31, 2010 for factories that have license and instructions were issued to produce only recyclable polythene.

A group of youths in Northern Thailand’s Chiang Mai town preparing to release a hot-air balloon on November 2, 2009 night. Photo – Mizzima. Like the Kathina in Burma, traditional Loi Kathrong is being celebrated widely throughout Thailand. The premier Burmese Rock Band “Emperor” on November 1, Sunday, celebrated its 25th anniversary with a live-show in Rangoon’s Kandawgyi Myawsikyun, where hundreds of fans cheered through the night. Alongside the Emperor’s lead singer Zaw Win Htut, popular vocalists Ringo, Sithu Lwin, Alex, Myo Kyawh Myaing, E- Toe, Haymar Nawin, and Shee, performed during the show. Vehicular traffic came to a halt in Burma’s former capital Rangoon after water inundated the streets following incessant rain on October 20. The Festival began in 2000 and is annually sponsored by the Chinese government. It is held regularly in the beginning of May. But, since the 8th festival last year, it has been shifted to October 3 -5. The new 5,000 kyat note, which entered circulation on October 1. Photo – Mizzima. Economic experts contend issuing the new 5,000 kyat note further indicates the erosion of Burma’s economy, in addition to sparking fears of increasing inflation.

National League for Democracy (NLD), Burma’s main opposition party, on Sunday reiterates their call for the release of detained party leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi, as they marked the 21st anniversary of party founding. Photo – Mizzima. The NLD has said, it is willing to join the 2010 elections if the ruling junta releases political prisoners, start a dialogue with the opposition as the 1990 election winning party, and agrees to amend its 2008 constitution. Barbecues, which are widely known as ‘Korean Kim’, have become popular among people in Rangoon. But apprehensive that the barbecues might be used with chemicals that could cause cancer, the Ministry of Health and Food & Drugs Authorities (FDA), is conducting a test on the food. Photo – Mizzima. FDA has also been conducting  tests on other foods including the popular tea-pickle or Laphet, chilli powders, and fish and shrimp paste and are known to be slightly more outspoken about their findings and their work compared to other ministries in military-ruled Burma. Zaw Win, Director of the Prison Directorate admonishes prisoners of the notorious Insein, before they are set free as part of the government’s amnesty to 7,114 prisoners. Photo – Mizzima. Sources said, authorities have tightened regulations on the flow of goods and commodities along  the border. A fire broke out in the Myanmar Winery and Distillery Co. Ltd and a boiler exploded in Hlegu township, Rangoon on Saturday 7 p.m. killing three people and injuring six. Photo: Mizzima.  Investigations are on in the case of the company, which has a lion's share of the whisky  market in Burma. Over 170 sales centres of business enterprises selling off commodities including clothes, cosmetic, food items, electrical goods and electronics at the Rangoon Trade Exhibition at the ‘Tatmadaw Hall’ with discounts of up to 60 per cent .
