King Thibaw palace at Ratnagiri

The palace of deposed King Thibaw can be seen in Ratnagiri, India. The British built this palace in c. 1910-11 and it has an area of about 25,803 sq. ft. Currently, this palace is open to the public as a museum.

The British invaded upper Myanmar and occupied Mandalay, Yadanabon palace in 1885 and then deposed King Thibaw and his consort Queen Suu Phayalat were sent to Ratnagiri, India. King Thibaw (1878-1885) is the last king of the Myanmar monarchy.

King Thibaw passed away on 6th Waning Day of Nattaw, 1278 BE or December 19, 1916 at the age of 59 at Ratnagiri palace and his mortal remains were cremated in the town. And in 1281 BE, the British let Queen Suu Phaya Latt go back to Myanmar and she resided at the mansion situated on Koemin Koechin Road, Bahan, Yangon. The Queen passed away on 10th Waxing Day of Nattaw, 1287 BE at the age of 66. Her mortal remains were entombed at Cantonment Park near the southern gate of Shwedagon pagoda.
