About the program:

19 August 2007 was the day leaders of the 88 Generation Students movement first marched in protest against a government enacted fuel price hike. Over the ensuing month the heartfelt emotions and desires of Burma’s citizenry would eventually spark the ‘Saffron Revolution’ of September, 2007, when monks led massive street protests in opposition to the country’s state of affairs. Mizzima reporters inside and outside Burma covered the unfolding events in detail.

From humble beginnings in August 1998 with only a laptop – not even a single telephone – and founded by three Burmese exiles in India, Mizzima News has matured into a far-reaching and reliable source of news, information and analysis for people inside and outside Burma. It has become a rare window into events affecting the lives of the Burmese people. Mizzima, specialising in Burma-related news and multimedia, now has a strong team of over 30 paid employees, including Burmese and foreign journalists, reporting from five countries: Burma, India, Bangladesh, Thailand and China. In May 2007, the International Press Institute (IPI) honored Mizzima, a member of the International Freedom of Expression eXchange (IFEX), with its “Free Media Pioneer 2007” award.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"When we look at the next 20 years, I do not see this military mechanism having a smooth transition. But it is not to be discouraged but to understand the reality as it is,"
