Background
Diplomatic relations since: 7 June 1949
Burma Policy: Constructive engagement
Major issues:
  • Religious ties
  • Economic cooperation
  • Cooperation in international and regional forums
The recent high level visits of the Presidents of Sri Lanka and Burma in 2009 after the defeat of the Liberation of the Tigers of the Tamil Eelam (LTTE) brought a quick spurt in Sri Lanka-Burma relations. The timing of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s visit to Burma shortly after his government faced international criticism over the humanitarian crisis caused by offensive against the LTTE was a sign that the two countries sought mutual support against international pressures and experience sharing in dealing with domestic terrorists and insurgents.

Some speculate that the Burmese government wants to learn from the Sri Lankan government's success in crushing the Tamil Tigers, so that his regime can apply any lessons learned to its efforts against the ethnic groups in Burma
