24 December 2009 - The United Nations General Assembly strongly condemned “the ongoing systematic violations of human rights” and passed non-binding resolution expressed deep concern at restrictions on effective and genuine participation of all stakeholders in the country, including the representatives of the National League for Democracy (NLD), in a genuine process of dialogue and national reconciliation. It also noted that the procedures established for the drafting of the Constitution resulted in a de facto exclusion of the opposition from the process.

Prof. Sadako Ogata Independent Expert of the UN Commission on Human Rights on the human rights situation in Myanmar (1990) accepted a French proposal to send “an independent expert to establish direct contacts with the government of Myanmar on developments relating to the human rights situation in Myanmar and report thereon to the commission at its next session:

29 November 1991 Passed a resolution urging the government of Myanmar to allow citizens to freely participate in the political process in accordance with the principles of the Universal declaration of Human rights and Secretary general appeals to the SLORC to release ASSK.
24 August 1992 Signed up to four Geneva conventions of 12 August 1948
2 December 1992 Signed up to the treaty on the Non-proliferation of nuclear Weapons.
16 March 1992 Executive director of the UNICEF submits a draft report “Possibilities for a United Nations Peace and Development Initiative for Myanmar (Burma) to UN secretary General Boutros Ghali. Suggested that the UN must become involved even if such involvement was not desired by the Myanmar government to supervise the democratic transition.
November 1993 SLORC signed a memorandum of understanding with the UNHCR concerning the repatriation of 250,000 persons from Bangladesh to Rakhine state.
December 1993 UN General Assembly passes the Third resolution calling for the unconditional release of ASSK and the creation of a government under the NLD as a consequence of its 1990 election victory. The General Assembly asked the UN secretary general to assist in implementing the resolution. SLORC indicated in July 1994 it was willing to hold discussions with a representative of the Secretary General
February 2004 United Nations organized an informal meeting in Tokyo to which a number of Asian and Western governments were invited to assist the Secretary General’s Special Envoy, Ambassador Razali, in developing a way forward which would result in the SPDC and the NLD working together to administer humanitarian assistance.
September 2006 UN Security Council decides to adopt Burma onto its formal agenda in response to the Havel-Tutu report but was defeated by a double veto from China and Russia
2007 UN Country Team leader, Charles Petrie, came in for criticism from all sides. The UNDP was accused of propping up the government,47 and the UN Food Programme of being a government spy. The government chided UN agencies for facilitating media coverage of the September events, and accused Petrie of violating his diplomatic status. His role in Myanmar was terminated in November following a statement critical of the government and tacitly supporting the opposition’s rationale for September demonstrations issued by the UN Country Team to mark UN Day.
