Internet likely down at least 2 more days

Chiang Mai – Internet connections in military-ruled Burma will remain down at least two more days after deadly Cyclone Nargis hit the country on Friday and Saturday, flooding machines critical to Internet connectivity. "The machines have water inside. We are now trying to clear the water out and will know the extent of the damage only around this evening. It will take two or three days at least to get these machines back to normal," said an employee of government-owned Myanmar Post and Telecommunications along Kabar Aye Pagoda Road in Rangoon. Internet connectivity in Burma has long been hit and miss as well due to government attempts to control the flow of information. The Internet has been entirely cut-off since early Saturday morning when Cyclone Nargis struck Rangoon. Government-owned Bagan Cyber's office, the only other Internet service provider in Burma besides Myanmar Post and Telecommunications, was also damaged in the storm, according to the residents. < Prev   Next >
