Cyclone Roanu is set to hit Myanmar and the coast of Bangladesh today and tomorrow, according to meteorological reports.
The cyclone, currently over the Bay of Bengal, also looks set to provide a flood threat to eastern India.
After dumping over a foot of rain, triggering destructive mudslides in Sri Lanka earlier in the week, an area of low pressure consolidated enough convection near its center to be deemed a tropical cyclone just off the coast of India's Andhra Pradesh state northeast of the city of Chennai Wednesday.
Cyclone Roanu is headed in a northeasterly direction at about 20 kilometres an hour. Winds near eye of the storm are about 75 kilometres per hour.
Rakhine and Chin states are preparing for the storm. In Bangladesh, the authorities are reported to have moved 2 million people inland.
