Representatives from the government and eight signatories of the country’s ceasefire accord are set to hold a Joint Monitoring Committee (JMC) meeting in Yangon today, according to report in the Global New Light of Myanmar on 29 October quoting U Hla Maung Shwe, a senior adviser at the Myanmar peace Centre (MPC).
The committee was formed along with the Union Peace Dialogue Joint Committee (UPDJC) during the three-day Joint implementation Coordination Meeting in Nay Pyi Taw two weeks ago. The JMC will be responsible for dealing with military matters, while the UPDJC will deal with political issues. The meeting is scheduled to run for three days at the Myanmar Peace Centre.
According to the accord, ceasefire monitoring activities will be undertaken transparently and responsibly to ensure strict adherence to the military code of conduct by all signatories. Once finalised, the code of conduct will use clearly-worded language, as will the monitoring guidelines for Union, state and regional level committees.
