Lower House MPs from Nay Pyi Taw Council area are trying to set up a university in the area, the MPs told Mizzima this week. 
Currently there is only one university, the Yezin Agricultural University, in Nay Pyi Taw Council area. So most of the students in Nay Pyi Taw who passed matriculation exams have to attend universities in Kyaukse, Yamethin and Mandalay. That is why the MPs are trying to launch a university in Nay Pyi Taw.
Lower House MP Than Soe Aung (Pyinmana Township) told Mizzima on June 17 that he has already discussed with Nay Pyi Taw Council chairman Dr. Myo Aung to launch a university in Nay Pyi Taw.
“We aim for the university in Nay Pyi Taw to meet international standards. The Nay Pyi Taw Council chairman told me to submit a letter to the State Counselor,” said Than Soe Aung.
They will submit a letter to State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi to open a university in Nay Pyi Taw and will discuss with the parliamentary committee for education promotion, said Than Soe Aung.
Lower House MP Yi Mon (aka) Maung Tin Thit (Pobbathiri Township in Nay Pyi Taw) told Mizzima that this is the country’s capital, so it needs a university. “Job opportunities for local people will arise due to the university,” he added.
There are eight townships in Nay Pyi Taw Council area and the population of the area is more than 1 million. In 2015-16 academic year, more than 5,000 out of more than 15,000 students in Nay Pyi Taw passed the matriculation exam.
