National League for Democracy party chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi said she would appoint ministers not only from party members but those who were competent to do the job. She was speaking at the 68th anniversary Independence Day celebration held at party HQ on January 4.
She also warned party members not to ask for ministerial portfolios in the new cabinet saying those who did not abide by the warning would be severely disciplined.
“I will not refrain from saying these words. I don’t much like those who want to be ministers. I say here clearly I will take severe action against those who send letters to the party asking for ministerial posts. I will give these posts to those who are suitable not because they are party members,” she said when talking about forming her new NLD cabinet.
She also said this at a meeting with tricycle workers on December 26 after saying some of her party members had sent letters to her asking for ministerial posts.
The NLD is currently holding meetings with incumbent President Thein Sein’s government for a smooth transfer of power.
According to provisions in the 2008 constitution, the first session of the newly elected parliament must be held within 60 days after general elections and state power must be transferred to the winning party within 120 days after holding general elections.
The NLD won over 80% of seats in the House of Representatives, the House of Nationalities and Region and State legislative assemblies in the recently held 2015 general elections.
