More than 300 villagers from villages in Monywa on Thursday staged a protest against Chinese mining company Wanbao because it had failed to follow recommendations made by the Letpadaung Copper Project Investigation Committee report.
Villagers from Sete, Zeetaw and Moekyoepyin villages in Letpadaung area participated in the protest.
Ma Sandar, a protestor, said, “We staged a protest against the company's copper production because they failed to follow the report. Our protest will continue.”
The villagers are also asking for compensation from the company because the company set up fences around lands owned by them claiming the lands are in the project area.
The protest was staged outside Myanmar Wanbao Company offices on the Pathein-Monywa intersection. Police were posted around the area.
