The Higher Education Department said that Yangon Distance Education University will open a separate study centre in Maungdaw Township for Muslim students living in Rakhine State.
Higher Education Department Director General Dr. Thein Win told RiA that responsible officials from his department would make field visits to the place where the study centre would be opened and study the situation of students who would attend at this centre but he could not provide further details at present.
“We will visit Maungdaw tomorrow June 26 by helicopter for a field visit. We don’t have details data for this centre yet at the moment. We will do it after making a field visit there and we can say what we will do at which places only after making this field visit. We must see how many students passed matriculation exam and how many of them will join our distance education programme. We can open this separate study centre for them only if there are students who will join this programme,” Dr. Thein Win said.
Yangon Distance Education University opened a  separate study centre at Thettkepyin village State High School in Sittway in 2017 for the students there.
Nine Muslim students with Myanmar and History majors attended at this Thetkephin village study centre and seven teachers came there for intensive course training, conducting examination and evaluation of their answer sheets.
Higher Education Department DG Dr. Thein Win said that they would open this Thetkepyin study centre this year if there were students who will join this centre to be educated.  
After the communal riots and conflicts which erupted in 2012, Muslim distance education university students lost their right to education and the government is now arranging for them to continue their education.
