Rumours suggest President Thein Sein will not run in parliamentary elections

A number of rumours are circulating that President Thein Sein will not run in parliamentary elections later this year. An aide to Myanmar President Thein Sein had said the president would not run in the elections according to a report by VOA on 13 July.
The senior official, who did not want to be named, told VOA’s Burmese service Monday that the president was expected to make a formal announcement soon. The aide did not give a reason for the move, but Reuters quotes an official as saying the decision is related to the president’s health.
However, latest reports in the Myanmar language The Voice on the 14 July quoting a senior officer in the President’s Office says that it cannot be confirmed about the reports that President Thein Sein will not run in the November election.
It reported the officer saying that President Thein Sein has not decided whether to contest the election or not and he will directly let the people know if he does not run in the elections.
