U Shwe Mann submits application to compete in general election

The chairman of Myanmar's ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) U Shwe Mann on Thursday submitted his application at the Taungoo District Election Commission to compete in the forthcoming multi-party general election scheduled for 8 November, according to his social media website Xinhua reported on 30 July.
The submission followed his recent announcement to run in his native Phyu township constituency of Bago Region.
U Shwe Mann, also speaker of Myanmar's House of Representatives and Union Parliament, won the 2010 multi-party general election for Zeyarthiri township constituency in Nay Pyi Taw as a representative to the House of Representatives (Lower House).
On Wednesday, the USDP nominated 149 parliamentary candidates to contest in all the constituencies in Yangon region.
The party is expected to announce the total number of its nominated candidates for all constituencies across the country on 5 August.
