Detained student leader hospitalized in Insein prison

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) - Detained student leader Kyaw Ko Ko is reportedly suffering from Jaundice and has been receiving treatment in Rangoon's notorious Insein prison. Kyaw Aye, Kyaw Ko Ko's father, one of the leaders of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABFSU), who was arrested and detained for his involvement in the September 2007 protests, visited his son in prison on Monday (January 5). He said his son was seriously ill and currently hospitalized. "When I visited my son in prison, the authorities told me that Kyaw Ko Ko was not in the prison cell but had been hospitalized since he was suffering from Jaundice," Kyaw Aye told Mizzima. Kyaw Ko Ko like several activists, who participated in the September 2007 protests, was arrested on March 16, 2008, while returning home after hiding from the authorities. He has been charged under the Video Act 32 (A) and is currently facing trial at the Minglar Taung Nyunt Township Court. A young lawyer Than Zaw Aung is defending him. Kyaw Ko Ko was one of the new leaders of the ABFSU, when it reformed on August 28, 2007, after the protests against skyrocketing commodity and fuel prices. < Prev   Next >
