Thailand will not use sanctions to push for change in Burma: Abhisit

Despite wanting to witness changes in neighbouring Burma, Thailand's new premier Abhisit Vejajjiva on Monday said, his government will not follow the western style of imposing economic sanctions.

Abhisit Vejajjiva, who took over last month as the new Prime Minister, spoke out for the first time about his intended policy regarding Burma at a short press briefing in Bangkok.

"The goals of Western countries and the countries in this region for Myanmar are not different - we all want to see some changes," Abhisit was quoted as saying by AFP.

His comments to the press came after his meeting with Burmese Deputy Foreign Minister Kyaw Thu on bilateral relations.

"Our measures may be different because of two main reasons: cultural differences and the distance of the countries. Those, who are far away, may use some measures, while those who are neighbours have to use other measures," the Thai Prime Minister said.

However, he did not comment on what steps Thailand might take to try and push for change in Burma, a country ruled by the military junta since 1962.
