Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – A devastating fire broke out on Tuesday in a plastic factory in Rangoon’s Dawpone Township gutting it, police and fire department sources said.
The blaze which started at about 1 p.m. local time was at the ‘Popular’ plastic factory located in Dawpone Township. It razed the factory to the ground, a police official in Dawpone police station said.
“Yes the fire broke out at the plastic factory in Dawpone and I think it destroyed the whole factory, but we have not got detailed information as yet. A lot of fire engines and fire fighters were deployed and the fire has been extinguished now,” the police officer told Mizzima.
A duty officer at the Tarkaytha Township, which is near Dawpone, said several fire engines were sent in from Tarkaytha and from the central fire department and it took about half an hour to extinguish the fire.
But he said, as the fire fighters have not returned to the office, he was unable to explain the cause of the fire as well as details of the loss incurred.
According to Burma’s official mouthpiece, the New Light of Myanmar, a total of 96 fires broke out in and around Burma in January but there were no human casualties, while in 2008, there were at least 719 incidents of fire with human casualties of up to 28 people.
