Rangoon (Mizzima) - A fatal traffic accident occurred in downtown Rangoon this afternoon, killing at least one person and injuring several others, eyewitnesses said.
A passenger bus, which according to eyewitnesses was an old Hino mini bus, turned over in front of Thamada Cinema Complex, at about 3:00 pm.
“More than half a dozen passengers, who were in a serious condition, were taken to an emergency unit at the Rangoon General Hospital,” an eyewitness, who was involved in helping the injured people, said.
The driver’s reckless driving was to be blamed; he said adding that it also might be partly due to the obsolete parts of the vehicle. He also suspected that the bus no longer had an original Hino motor.
Such vehicles were already more than 50 years old. However, the owners usually use home-made spare parts, to keep them running at the risk of passengers’ lives.
The eyewitness also said it was rush hour, during which bus-drivers usually drove fast to compete with one another for more passengers on board.
