Radio Australia launches Burmese service

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Australia Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) launched its first Burmese service programme on Monday.

The programme, to be aired three times a day, will promote awareness on Burma as well as educate Burmese listeners regarding the forthcoming 2010 elections and related issues, the ABC Chief Executive Officer, Hanh Tran said in a statement.

The morning programmes will be aired at 5 a.m. Burmese Standard Time on Short Wave 25, khz 11840 and 49, Kzh 5995, and 7 a.m. (Burmese Standard time) on SW 16, Kzh 17665 and 31, Kzh 9730 respectively, the statement said.

The programme, to be aired seven days a week, will also be on air at 10 p.m. (BST) on SW 25, Kzh 22980.

The Melbourne-based ABC is currently airing programmes in English, Chinese, Indonesian, Khmer, Vietnam, France, Papua New Guinea, as well as Burmese.
