Public discussion on Burma’s present crisis

Bangkok (Mizzima) - Recognized authorities on Burmese politics and international relations are poised to hold a public forum on the current situation in Burma and the role of international actors vis-à-vis the troubled Southeast Asian country at a symposium todaypublic-discussion-crisis1 on the grounds of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

“Myanmar/Burma – Domestic Developments and International Responses”, brings together both Burmese and foreign observers and scholars to offer their insights into the impact of Burma’s recently announced election law, the firesale of state entities and the possible impact of Washington’s evolving Burma strategy.

Divided into two sections, the first panel, focusing on current developments in Burma, comprises Dr. Nay Win Maung, Co-founder of Myanmar EGRESS, Harn Yawnghwe, Director of EuroBurma, Larry public-discussion-crisis2Jagan, a freelance journalist and Aung Zaw, editor of The Irrawaddy. The second session, dealing with the role of foreign governments and international bodies, will hear from H.E. Ron Hoffmann, Canadian Ambassador, George Kent, Political Counselor to the U.S. Embassy and Dr. Maung Zarni, a fellow at the London School of Economics.

The day’s agenda convenes at 8:30 and is co-hosted by Chulalongkorn’s Institute of Security and International Studies (ISIS) and Asian Studies Program (ASP).
