New Delhi (Mizzima) – A blaze at a high school in Sagaing Division in Burma’s northwest yesterday has spurred the deferral of oral examinations, a teacher said.

The fire raged for three hours after starting at the two-storey Kalay Township High School No. 1 at about 2 a.m. Although the school was open yesterday, the oral examinations for the English and mathematics competitions for fourth to eighth grade students were postponed.

“The fire started from an electric short. There were no casualties. The estimated total loss is about 4.8 million kyat (about US$4,800),” teacher Tin Maung Win told Mizzima.

Three fire engines were required to put out the blaze and Buddhist monks from a nearby monastery also helped with firefighting.

A fireman said: “Some teachers including the headmaster live at the school. They were awakened by the fire. Then the school’s security staff rang the warning bell and many people were awakened by the sound and helped to put out the fire.”

The school has 12 rooms including a headmaster’s office, computer room, library and a teachers’ lounge.

Police were still carrying out investigations into the incident.
