Torrential rain, flooding hits farms in Mandalay area

Bangkok (Mizzima) – Heavy rain on Saturday caused the Kalatal Stream to overflow its bank and flood farmers’ fields in several villages in Nyaung-U Township in the Mandalay area, according to farmers.

Photo: MizzimaThe Kalatal Stream, a tributary of the Irrawaddy River, overflowed its banks after a torrential downpour from around 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

‘Some bean fields were destroyed', a villager in Kalatal village told Mizzima.

Another villager, who was 57 years old, said: ‘This was the first time I’ve seen such a flood in my life. There were no casualties because it happened during the  day, but a child was swept away in the water and was rescued by villagers on the opposite bank’.

The state-run newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported the heavy rain, but there was no report of the amount in Nyaung-U Township. More than three inches was reported in the Mandalay area.
