Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – The Burmese government has revoked a previous invitation to local and foreign journalists to attend the country’s first ever forum on poverty in Naypyitaw.

On Wednesday, the Information Department invited 14 local journalists and four foreign journalists to attend the forum on Friday, but the invitation was cancelled on Thursday evening, according to a foreign journalist.

An editor said that nongovernmental organizations, social and charitable organizations and national planning groups would attend the forum.

The foreign journalist said, ‘At around 6 p.m. Thursday, I was called and informed that the invitation was revoked in accordance with the instruction by superior officials in Naypyitaw. They said the media will be invited next time’.

A local journalist said he received a call from the Press Scrutiny and Registration Division to inform him, after he had arranged transportation and booked a hotel room.
