Mizzima News – About 25 Burmese citizens staged a two-hour protest in front of the Burmese embassy in Tel Aviv on Tuesday. The protest was organized by Burma Action (Israel).

‘They took off (military) uniforms and have become civilians. But nothing has been changed. We want the people (of Israel) to know that the government is unfair’, Aung Naing Win, a member of Burma Action (Israel), told Mizzima.

‘We support Aung San Suu Kyi. As Win Tin said earlier, to oppose this government is better than doing nothing’, Aung Naing Win said.

During the demonstration, the activists shouted, ‘Freedom political prisoners: our cause’, ‘To end the civil war: our cause’, and ‘To achieve democracy: our cause’. Aung Naing Win said personnel from the Burmese Embassy took their photographs

There are about 80 Burmese living in Israel. Most work as domestic help, factory workers or in restaurants.

Six years ago, some Burmese who took part in protests against the former Burmese junta were unable to get their passports extended, said one of the activists.

The activist said some Burmese activists have been arrested by the Israeli authorities and sentenced from one to two years in prison, but the authorities released them after human rights organizations objected to the sentences.
