Chiang Mai (Mizzima) - Three gunmen on Saturday robbed two gold shops in Kanni village in Kawkareik Township in Karen State, killing the shop owner and escaping with gold, according to residents.
Residents said around 3 p.m. three gunmen who wore motorcycle helmets entered two gold shops, threatened the shop owners and took three viss (1 viss = 1.6 kg) of gold from the Ma Nan Mya shop and 0.5 viss from the Mibametta shop. Owner Ma Nan Mya, 39, was shot dead by a robber. She was cremated at the Kanni Cemetery on Monday.
“After the robbers had left the shops, Ma Nan Mya shouted for help. Then she was shot dead in her head,” said Mi Cho, a witness.
The total value of the gold was estimated at more than 200 million kyat (about US$ 249,000), according to sources close to the shops.
