New Delhi (Mizzima) – An elderly man died on Wednesday afternoon in a fire in a three-story building in Latha Township in Rangoon Region, according to the Latha Township Fire Department.

Kyaw Nyunt Thien, 77, died in the incident. Neighbours said the fire started about 1 p.m. on the first floor of the three-story building and lasted about 45 minutes.

A malfunctioning hotplate apparently started the fire.

“The man had suffered a stroke. His son and daughter-in-law were at work,” said a neighbour.  “We smelled something like burning papers. We looked and found flames and smoke coming from the room. We tried to put out the fire, but we heard the sound of explosions. So we ran away.”
