Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he welcomed the productive meeting of Aung San Suu Kyi with the Burmese Minister for Social Welfare Aung Kyi on Monday in Rangoon.

Responding to the meeting between the pro-democracy leader and the Burmese government minister, Ban said the two parties have expressed satisfaction at their positive talks and their intention to cooperate further on matters beneficial to the people of Burma.
Suu Kyi and Aung Kyi met for 70 minutes in what they described were “productive” and “constructive” talks.
In a statement, Ban said he hoped such efforts would continue with a view to building mutual understanding through genuine dialogue. He also called on the Burmese government to consider early action on the release of more than 2,000 political prisoners in the country.
Some political prisoners are serving sentences as long as 65 to 100 years.
