(Mizzima) – High-level Japanese and U.S. officials discussed Burma relations last week. Burmese President Thein Sein has been invited to visit Japan this year to attend the 2012 Mekong-Japan Summit.
In a meeting with Japanese officials, Kurt Campbell, the U.S. assistant secretary in the bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said he discussed the U.S. desire to engage Burma and its support for Burma’s reform process.
“We underscored that we need to see continued progress in Naypyitaw with respect to the release of political prisoners, on issues related to political reform, and other steps associated with non-proliferation and activities between Myanmar and North Korea,” Campbell said in a press conference on Saturday.
